Haiti has suffered multiple catastrophes over the past 6-7 years that have devastated this impoverished island nation. While WCDP is not involved in disaster relief, we believe that by establishing stronger, resilient communities, improving local economies and infrastructure, and ensuring that families have safe housing to live in, we can help reduce future casualties resulting from such events.
A Village PlannerTM
WCDP Founder, John Ahrens, has a goal of creating an urban planning type of guide that is scaled down to the village level.
Village planning has unique challenges and opportunities that traditional urban planning does not address. WCDP seeks to work with the leaders and residents of small to medium sized villages in developing countries to create a guide for community organization, growth and development for years to come.
Harmony Villages TM
WCDP has recently embarked on a project to develop the idea of a "Harmony Village".
A Harmony Village is one that embraces the core concepts of sustainability, equity and environmental consciousness as its members come together for their mutual benefit. It addresses community needs in 6 key areas of Sustenance, Sanctuary, Resources, Enjoyment, Prosperity and Appreciation.
Once this program has been fully realized, communities will be able to apply for Harmony Village Status by meeting all of the required criteria for this designation.
KaNaKi is a CBO comprised of three villages in Uganda - Kasolwe, Namusita and Kikubi, in Uganda's Kamuli district. They are working on establishing a micro loan program while also building a community owned and operated school. WCDP has been helping them achieve these goals. This is also likely to be a top candidate for a Harmony Village.
Buhoma, Uganda, is a small village that serves as the launch point for viewing mountain gorillas. WCDP is working with the Buhoma Mukono Community Development Association to help them build capacity and develop a community development action plan for a sustainable, self-reliant future. WCDP sees this community as a great example of working together.
